How can I Sign Up for ELSA?
You can register your preschool, kindergarten, centre or school here.
Also, if you would like to receive updates about ELSA, please subscribe to our newsletter.
What age group is ELSA designed for?
The program is designed for four and five-year-old children who are in preschool, kindergarten, preparatory or reception years. You can also adapt the program to make it suitable for children aged 3 or 6.
What do you mean by STEM?
STEM is an integrated approach to teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics by exploring the real world.
Children learn STEM through play, for example, when they:
- create a community garden
- build structures that are strong or tall
- fill different containers with water or sand
- create patterns or draw designs
STEM Practices include:
- exploring and challenging
- problem finding and solving
- generating ideas
- using tools to produce artefacts
- curiosity
- teamwork
Exploring STEM practices helps children develop strong skills in problem solving and communication that can be used later in life.
When does the ELSA Program start?
You can start ELSA anytime! Our subscriptions run for a year and you can choose to use the ELSA Program as a valuable resource when needed or as a structured year-long program.
Which tablet devices support the ELSA apps?
ELSA apps will operate on most Apple iPads and Android tablet devices. However, some older devices won’t work with our two augmented reality (AR) app activities.
See a full list of compatible devices.
To ensure the ELSA apps work properly on your tablet, please check the device settings and confirm that you have the latest operating system software installed. If your tablet is running an old operating system and an update is available, please install the update.
Please note: ELSA apps DO NOT work on Chromebooks or laptop devices. ELSA children’s apps have been designed for tablet devices only. The Educator app has been designed to work on tablets and smartphones.
Our apps have also not been designed for or tested on smartboards. They may work on some boards and not on others. We suggest screen sharing from a tablet device to a screen to get the best results.
Do I need to be good at STEM to use ELSA?
Not at all. ELSA is all about STEM concepts and practices. You already use this approach by encouraging children to ask questions, make predictions, try things, and reflect on what happened and why.
By participating in the program, you’ll find new ways for children and their families to engage with STEM concepts and practices.
Can I get help with tablets and digital technology?
Absolutely. The ELSA program supports you to incorporate tablets and digital learning within existing preschool, kindergarten and Foundation programs.
Contact ELSA support with any technical questions you might have.
What about screen time concerns?
The ELSA apps are only one third of the overall program. We use these to create meaningful opportunities for children to explore rich digital learning environments.
Children spend as little as 10 minutes per week on the apps and we suggest they spend a maximum of 40 minutes per week engaging with the ELSA apps. This is likely to occur across multiple shorter sessions, and is consistent with screen time guidelines from the Australian Government.
The ELSA apps have been carefully designed with early childhood experts to support active play.
Is my privacy protected? What data will be collected?
We take privacy seriously. The privacy of all participants – including children, educators and families – will be protected when participating in the ELSA Program.
For example, data on app usage will be collected to help us improve the program. This data will be stored securely on Australian servers.
Mobile phone numbers and email addresses will ONLY be used to facilitate the running of the ELSA Program.
If you have any questions about privacy, please contact us at team@elsa.edu.au.
Can children's families participate?
Yes. Families of children from ELSA centres and schools are encouraged to participate.
We have developed a Families web-app to support a strong connection between children’s homes and preschools.
Find out more about how families can be involved on our For Families page.
